Climate Fairytales Slovenia

Workshops that invited community members to transform climate anxiety into hope through creative writing. During 2,5 hours, participants crafted original fairytales that reimagined our relationship with the planet.

Project Pillar: Well-being

Status: Finished (from February 2025 to July 2025)

Funded under PSLifestyle project (European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101037342.)

About the project

  • Transform climate anxiety into hope through storytelling—empowering participants to process emotions, imagine sustainable futures, and share positive narratives with their communities.

  • We combined short facilitator‑led workshops and public sharing within a simple SEED–GROW–HARVEST arc: begin by naming climate anxiety and learning fairytale structure (SEED), craft original stories in guided sessions (GROW), and present a curated selection to the public via exhibition and print (HARVEST).

  • Direct participants: 28 people spanning students to retirees from varied backgrounds in Ljubljana. They had interest in climate-related topics and/or creative writing. The workshop was appropriate for beginners in creative writing.

Project team: Lilalab’s facilitator led the workshops, the editor edited the selected texts and the illustrator illustrated the selected fairytales.

Supporters: In collaboration with the City of Ljubljana and Circular Change Institute for Circular Economy.

Public audience: Visitors to the Info točka Misija 100 exhibition (Pogačarjev trg 3, weekdays 10:00–14:00, 1 July – end of August 2025).

  • SEED (March–April 2025)

    • Five in‑person workshops (≈2.5h each) in Ljubljana on:

      1. understanding climate anxiety, 2) learning fairytale structure as a tool for personal & social transformation, 3) preparing to write & share.
        Dates: 13 Mar (17:00–19:00), 14 Mar (10:00–12:00 & 14:00–16:00), 11 Apr (14:00–16:00 & 17:00–19:00).

    GROW (Workshop creation phase)

    • Participants wrote 20 original climate fairytales; editorial team selected 10 for copy‑editing, illustration, and print (A5 cards).

    HARVEST (Public sharing)

    • Exhibition at Info točka Misija 100 (Ljubljana City) with public readings by selected authors at the opening; display 1 July–end Aug 2025, weekdays 10:00–14:00.

    • Digital Library / Exhibition for all writter Climate Fairytales.

    • Financing: The Climate Fairytales project was funded by the European Union as part of the PSLifestyle project, which received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101037342.

    • Local partners: The City of Ljubljana and the Circular Change Institute for Circular Economy supported implementation, venues, and promotion.

    • Project resources:

      • Workshop venues in Ljubljana.

      • Professional editorial, illustration, and graphic design for 10 selected stories.

      • Printing of A5 story cards for public distribution.

      • Exhibition infrastructure and coordination support via Info točka Misija 100.

      • Digital tools for the online presentation of stories.

    • 28 participants engaged; produced 20 original stories, 10 curated, edited, illustrated, and printed for public display.

    • Public visibility & engagement via a central‑city exhibition with opening readings; sustained access for visitors throughout July–August 2025 (weekdays, 10:00–14:00). MojaObčina

    • Emotional & educational outcomes: the process addressed climate anxiety creatively and inclusively; the stories now serve as tools for education, dialogue, and community action in both print and electronic form.

    • Keep the stories accessible (print + digital) and continue community presentations.

    • Replicate the workshop format in additional neighbourhoods/schools and invite new cohorts to write localized climate fairytales (building on the proven 3‑part structure).

    • Explore further collaborations with municipal and cultural partners using the Misija 100 / PSLifestyle touchpoint as a model for future exhibitions.

  • "I’m leaving the workshop with a smile and a little less fear about the climate future."

  • "You have equipped us with tools for happiness. In one hand, I carry the sun; in the other, golden laughter."
